I want my students to get familiarized with the dissertation proposal process (clarifying what they need to know for proposal submission and what can wait until later), as well as becoming familiar with the essential themes of doing research using a methodology, including issues of researcher positionality/bias, research ethics, validity or trustworthiness, and limitations/delimitations of methodological approaches. Ideally, I want them to have settled on a methodology that is congruent with their research inquiry and literature review discussion, and to be able to present the methodology in a proposal-like submission.
